Continuing our celebration of the T.R.E.E.S Pets…

They help create the field stations ‘Home’ away from home vibe we strive for. They make us laugh, they support us in tough times and occasionally will take care of mice and other unwanted guests..

Meet Diesel - the OG! He has been with us since day 1. He jumped in our vehicle from our mechanics yard as a young cat, smeared in Diesel (thus the name) and never looked back. He is now about 13-14 years old and still purring strong.

He is currently writing his memoir - My life as a T.R.E.E.S cat - should out in print shortly..

We’re thrilled to have recently banded a Great C

We’re thrilled to have recently banded a Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus)— a unique bird that’s vital to healthy forest biodiversity.

Recognisable by its crested head and long tail, this species is usually a higher canopy bird and will rarely make it down to the nets, making its capture even more special. It can be found breeding across North and Central America and winters in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Our long-term monitoring helps us understand its movement and conservation needs. Every bird we study is a step closer to safeguarding Belize’s rich natural heritage.

Kentucky Warbler (Geothlypis formosa), a common mi

Kentucky Warbler (Geothlypis formosa), a common migrant to Belize off the breeding season. They appear to have high site fidelity and we recapture many of the same individuals year after year.

The oldest recorded individual of this species was at least 8 years old and recaptured in Alabama. One of the key pieces of vital information we are able to gain from banding. The only way to get an idea how old wild birds live…pretty cool!

Join us for our Neotropical Bat Capture Techniques

Join us for our Neotropical Bat Capture Techniques Internship. Currently, 4 positions are open for summer internships in 2023, here at our beautiful T.R.E.E.S. Research Center in the Maya Mountains of Belize. Over 60 different bat species have been recorded on our property!

Want to spend time living and learning about the jungle in the beautiful country of Belize? Want to learn how to handle bats and study their ecology? Then this is the internship for you!

The goal of this internship is to give the student various experiences in tropical bat studies that will aid the student in developing their skills for a variety of future education and employment opportunities. The main component of the project will be to work with T.R.E.E.S biologists and staff in establishing long-term bat monitoring projects (mist-netting, habitat characterization, mark-recapture). These baseline data will contribute to future ecological studies (breeding season, migration, activity phases, species composition) on bat populations present on the T.R.E.E.S property and elsewhere in the adjacent protected areas in the Maya Mountains.

Terms:
• Start-date: now
• Length of position: minimum 4 weeks; longer is preferable.
• Schedule: 30 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
• Fees for the Apprenticeship: $479 USD/week which includes all tutorship, equipment, food & lodging
• To handle bats you must have proof of up-to-date rabies immunity, including a recent titer if you received the vaccine more than two years ago.
