A little surprise last night 🦇 a naked backed b

A little surprise last night 🦇 a naked backed bat! Pteronotus fulvus, a bat that is commonly detected acoustically but had never been captured in our mist nets! One individual had been found dead in front of our director, Vanessa's house in 2020. This individual last night was a female flying over the creek and was carrying a baby in her belly! ♥️

It is called naked backed because their wings meet at the center of their back, as if they didn’t have fur on their backs. However, they actually do have fur on their backs, which can be found underneath their wings!

We are back this year with another Youth Camp! We

We are back this year with another Youth Camp! We will be covering multiple interesting and exciting topics during the camp such as Regenerative Agriculture Techniques, Wildlife Conservation, Kriol Drumming, Basic Biology, Wildlife Ecology, and much more.

This year we are accepting female students from ages 13 to 15 from Gales Point and Belize City.

For years we have been inviting kids from gang-susceptible areas in order to provide a safe haven at our field station where they can develop hands on skills in agriculture and applied biology.

Kentucky Warbler (Geothlypis formosa), a common mi

Kentucky Warbler (Geothlypis formosa), a common migrant to Belize off the breeding season. They appear to have high site fidelity and we recapture many of the same individuals year after year.

The oldest recorded individual of this species was at least 8 years old and recaptured in Alabama. One of the key pieces of vital information we are able to gain from banding. The only way to get an idea how old wild birds live…pretty cool!

Join us for our Neotropical Bat Capture Techniques

Join us for our Neotropical Bat Capture Techniques Internship. Currently, 4 positions are open for summer internships in 2023, here at our beautiful T.R.E.E.S. Research Center in the Maya Mountains of Belize. Over 60 different bat species have been recorded on our property!

Want to spend time living and learning about the jungle in the beautiful country of Belize? Want to learn how to handle bats and study their ecology? Then this is the internship for you!

The goal of this internship is to give the student various experiences in tropical bat studies that will aid the student in developing their skills for a variety of future education and employment opportunities. The main component of the project will be to work with T.R.E.E.S biologists and staff in establishing long-term bat monitoring projects (mist-netting, habitat characterization, mark-recapture). These baseline data will contribute to future ecological studies (breeding season, migration, activity phases, species composition) on bat populations present on the T.R.E.E.S property and elsewhere in the adjacent protected areas in the Maya Mountains.

Terms:
• Start-date: now
• Length of position: minimum 4 weeks; longer is preferable.
• Schedule: 30 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
• Fees for the Apprenticeship: $479 USD/week which includes all tutorship, equipment, food & lodging
• To handle bats you must have proof of up-to-date rabies immunity, including a recent titer if you received the vaccine more than two years ago.
